Zirconium Crowns

Zirconium crowns are made of zirconium, which has a strong type crystal structure. They are ideal in cases of damaged teeth due to extreme decaying, aesthetically unsightly teeth, discolored teeth, and especially in renewing old crowns, crowns that may have lost compatibility with surrounding gums. Zirconium crowns are long-lasting and they have properties that make them to be resistant against breaking, chipping, cracks and oxidation. They are also preferred because they are not worn out for a long time;  their clear, translucent appearance allows for the ideal tooth coloring that matches with the rest of patient’s teeth. Since Zirconim does not need to have the metal layer below the outer layer (as in porcelain crowns), they could be ideal for those who have metal allergy.

How do we do it?

As in other crowns, after we thin the tooth minimally (about 1mm or less), we take the impression of the tooth and the gum for the lab that will make the crown. Becuase Zirconium crown does not need to be fused with the metal layer below the surface, these crowns are much thinner therefore not much of a layer needs to be shaved off from the tooth.

Timeline

On average the whole process requires ony two visits to our clinic and it takes about a week. On your first visit, under local anesthesia, reshaping of your teeth is done and the impression is taken.  On the second visit, zirconium crown is attached to the tooth.
