Are you suffering from red, swollen or bleeding gum? Treating inflamed gum will not only get rid of swelling and bleeding, it might also prevent other complications in other parts of your body.

How do treat the gum disease?

The most basic form of gum disease appears as inflamation and it is mostly experienced by adults. When certain bacteria attack the soft tissue surrounding teeth, inflamation manifests itself as red swelling and bleeding gum. Good news is that our dentists can treat it, and by following a strict hygine regimen, gum disease can be treated.

Treating gum disease early on also prevents teeth and bone loss. By applying deep cleaning (also known as scaling) and smoothing the surface of the root (planning),  our dentists will try to stop and treat gum infamation and stop or slow down the bone loss.

In order to catch gum inflamation in its early stage, visiting a dentist office at least every six months is recommended.

Duration of Treatment

In oder to treat the gum diseases, depending on each individual’s circumstances, we might consider some of the following:

Cleaning and root correction is a deep clening process, done under local anesthesia. Plaques and tartars formed above and below the gum line are removed and cleaned, and rough spots extending into roots are smoothed out (scaling). This deep cleaning will get rid of bacteria and thus allow healthy connection between the gum and teeth again. After the deep cleaning process you may experience some temporary sensitivity in your teeth and gums but this usually lasts about 48 hours.

If your gum is receding from teeth, gum (Periodontitis) surgery could be recommended. During this procedure, comprehensive cleaning is performed to assess the level of infection.

Gum and bone grafting can be done to treat especially gum disesases that cause receding from teeth, or damaged gum, or to repair jaw bone. Bone grafting is also widely used to strengthen base bone where the implant is placed.

Summary of the time lines: gum disease treatment duration varies from person to peson and each person’s unique circumstances. Periodic oral exam is recommended at least once every six months. If you have the case of a light gum disease , cleaning them takes only 30 minutes, while some advanced cleaning procedures may last up to 2 hours. However, If your case requires corrective surgery, the procedure might take more than one visit to our clinic.
